Before you bring a new piece home, take a few minutes to check the whole journey from the curb to its place in your room.
Start with the room
Measure the space and compare it with the product’s overall width, depth and height. Mark the footprint with removable tape. Allow space for people to walk around the piece, pull out dining chairs and fully open drawers or cabinet doors.
Check every entrance
Measure clear door openings with doors fully open, accounting for handles and trim. Note tight turns in hallways, low ceilings, stair railings and landings. A piece that fits through the front door still needs enough turning space to reach its final room.
Apartments and shared buildings
Check elevator dimensions, entrance access and any booking or insurance requirements with your building before delivery is arranged. Tell the merchant about stairs, restricted access or parking limitations so it can confirm the available service.
Read the product details
Compare overall furniture dimensions with package dimensions when those are available. Do not assume legs, arms or other parts can be removed unless the product instructions confirm it. Ask the store about any measurement that is unclear before ordering.
On the day
Clear the route, protect delicate surroundings and keep children and pets away from moving furniture. Review the actual delivery service you purchased; assembly and packaging removal should only be expected when expressly included. Keep packaging until the item has been checked.
